First let me preface this by saying I would bet my life’s savings Greg McGarity would never do what I’m about to ask. McGarity is more of a problem than a solution for Georgia, but because he’s not an in-your-face AD, most people don’t know much about him.

My biggest point of frustration isn’t that Mark Richt is still the coach. It’s that I have no faith in the guy tasked with replacing Richt to not screw up the hire.

Having said that, the solution to Georgia’s woes is simple.

Hire Tom Herman.

McGarity committed (finally) to fully fund the Georgia football program after last season. The support staff budget was unleashed and the indoor practice facility everyone has bitched about will be here in 2017.

Many of the behind-the-scenes issues that plagued Georgia seem to have been fixed, at least financially speaking.

What Georgia now needs is a true game changer as a head coach. A coach who doesn’t just want to win, but wants to dominate and be remembered for winning.

Richt is a lot of things. First and foremost he’s a great human being. He cares about his players. And that should be commended and promoted. But I’ve never gotten the impression he wakes up everyday with the goal of being the best head coach in history. And that’s what Georgia fans should have. They have the money to pay for that kind of head coach and the necessary tools to allow that head coach to fulfill that goal.

I think Herman is that guy.

Herman has had success everywhere he’s been, and he’s not always had the best talent. His offenses as OC at Iowa State were some of the most explosive in school history. Before that his Rice offenses were also dynamic and explosive.

He then moved to Ohio State where he developed not one, not two, but three quarterbacks into starting-caliber players. He helped make Braxton Miller a competent quarterback, and Miller was hardly a natural throwing the ball.

Herman is now at Houston in his first year as a head coach. Houston is off to an 8-0 start. The man can coach. And more importantly, he can lead an offense, something you cannot win without in modern CFB. The days of locking down teams and playing mediocre offense while winning titles is over.

Herman is a relentless recruiter who will ensure Georgia recruits at an elite level, something is will never have an issue doing with even a barely competent head coach.

Herman is also a member of MENSA. While being brilliant doesn’t equate to guaranteed success, if nothing else Georgia fans could enjoy a coach who knew how to manage the clock. Richt, for all of his positives, has been nothing short of abysmal in this category his entire tenure.

Yes, replacing Richt might lead to Jacob Eason, the all-world QB recruit committed to UGA, going elsewhere. To that I say: who cares? I’m sure Eason will be a stud, and I also think Richt and Eason would be a good fit. But you can’t let a program sit in a perpetual state of underperformance in the hopes of an 18-year-old panning out. The current QB roster at UGA has a couple of kids who were highly touted, none of which have been any good.

Herman is a guy who has a record of landing good QBs and making them great. I’ll take my chances with that over another 3-5 years of Richt. Having said all of that, I suspect Richt will be here next year. Georgia has always been ad administration more concerned with the money rolling in and no NCAA issues than it has been one that demands excellence on the field. While I don’t think McGarity and Richt get along all too well, I don’t think McGarity has the balls to put his own neck on the line.

So while Georgia sits on a gold mine in terms of surrounding talent and potential, it will continue to accept the occasional run at an SEC title as the best it can do. That’s what a lack of leadership looks like, folks.
